Phenolic formwork plywood: what it is and why it is the on-site benchmark

Phenolic formwork plywood is the most widely used solution in concrete works when fair-faced finish, high reuse count and dimensional stability are required. It is a birch multi-layer plywood coated on both faces with a heat-pressed phenolic film. The result is a very smooth, water-repellent panel that resists the alkalis of cement and delivers 30 to 60 pours before being replaced. This article goes deep into its composition, the two main variants (FW and HEXA), thicknesses and formats, and compares its real economics against steel and three-layer formwork.

Technical composition of phenolic plywood

A benchmark phenolic plywood panel has this structure:

  • Core: 9, 11 or 13 veneers of birch of European and Central Asian origin, cross-bonded with phenolic resin (WBP, weather & boiling water proof) to EN 314-2 class 3.
  • Faces: heat-pressed phenolic film at 120, 167 or 220 g/m² on both sides. This is what delivers the smooth surface and its characteristic red-brown colour.
  • Edges: sealed at the factory with waterproof acrylic paint, preventing water ingress between veneers.

This combination is what separates a technical phenolic panel from an imitation. A plywood with class 1 bonding (dry interior) coated with phenolic film is sometimes sold as "phenolic" but delaminates after 4-6 pours. For public works or intensive rotation, ask for EN 314-2 class 3 certificate plus CE marking under EN 13986.

The two types we handle: FW and HEXA

FW — standard film-faced

FW is the classic phenolic: smooth red-brown surface, both faces with 120-167 g/m² phenolic film. It is the reference option for walls, columns and elements requiring fair-faced concrete. Delivers 40 to 60 pours with proper handling. At KEFI BOSQUE GROUP, FW 12 mm starts at €48.59 per sheet and FW 18 mm at €67.11 per sheet DDP Valencia (1250×2500 mm format, VAT excluded).

HEXA — anti-slip with hexagonal texture

HEXA shares the same base composition but incorporates a hexagonal texture on one or both faces. It is not used for fair-faced concrete (the texture prints on the surface) but as an anti-slip panel for loading platforms, truck floors, formwork ramps and surfaces where operators walk on site. Delivers 30 to 50 pours; the hexagonal surface provides grip even in wet conditions. HEXA 12 mm starts at €53.34 per sheet DDP Valencia.

Practical rule: FW to face the concrete, HEXA to face the operator. Many formwork contractors buy both: FW as the formwork skin, HEXA for the associated working platforms in the same system.

Thicknesses and applications

ThicknessTypical applicationConcrete pressureExpected reuses
12 mmLight formwork, thin columns, curved elementsLow-medium30-40
15 mmStandard-height walls and columnsMedium35-50
18 mmTall walls, high concrete pressureHigh40-60
21 mmHorizontal slabs, floors, HEXA platformsHigh with load40-55

Thickness should be chosen based on concrete pressure (pour height, speed and concrete consistency) and the spacing of walers and studs in the formwork system. A 12 mm panel on a 3 m wall with self-compacting concrete bulges; a 21 mm panel on a 30 cm column is a cost overkill.

Formats: 1250×2500 vs 1525×3050

Phenolic formwork is made in two main formats, and picking the wrong one means wasted material.

  • 1250 × 2500 mm — European standard. Compatible with Peri, Doka, Efco, Ulma modular systems. Easy to handle on site (one person can move it), reduces waste in urban formwork with small elements.
  • 1525 × 3050 mm — XL format. Reduces the number of vertical joints in tall walls and optimises material use in industrial works, silos, long perimeter walls. Requires mechanical handling (two operators or clamp).

Spanish public works overwhelmingly use 1250×2500. For walls 3 m and above, XL 1525×3050 can cut visible joints by 15-20%, translating into less concrete rework.

On-site cutting and fittingEasyVery difficultEasy
Typical cost per m²/use€0.8-1.3/m²/use€0.4-0.8/m²/use€1.0-1.6/m²/use

The practical reading: steel formwork delivers the lowest cost per m²/use when amortised across very large works with repetitive geometry (industrial buildings, standard-storey high-rises). Phenolic is the balanced option for medium works with fair-faced finish and frequent adaptation. Three-layer is the choice for slabs and floors where rigidity matters more than finish.

The real economics: cost per m² and per use

A phenolic board pays for itself in 4 to 6 pours. Everything above that is pure margin. Simplified:

  • FW 18 mm 1250×2500 = 3.125 m² per sheet. Price €67.11. Base cost = €21.47/m².
  • With 40 pours: €0.54/m²/use.
  • With 60 pours: €0.36/m²/use.
  • An imported class 1 board sold as phenolic at €45/sheet, delivering 8 pours before delamination: €1.80/m²/use — more than triple.

Buying cheap in phenolic plywood almost always ends up expensive. Savings come from maximising reuses: sealing edges after every cut, applying release agent each cycle, cleaning with a plastic spatula, and storing under cover.

What to ask a supplier before buying

  1. Bonding class? Must be EN 314-2 class 3 (WBP) for formwork. Ask for the certificate.
  2. Origin of the birch? Birch of European and Central Asian origin delivers higher density and stability than combi/eucalyptus.
  3. Weight of the phenolic film? 120 g/m² basic, 167 g/m² intermediate, 220 g/m² premium. More grammage = more pours.
  4. Edges sealed? Must come factory-sealed with waterproof acrylic paint.
  5. CE marking under EN 13986? Mandatory for structural use in construction.
  6. Local stock? Buying from an importer with Spanish stock avoids 6-8 week lead times.
