Formwork plywood: what it is and why choosing well pays off

Formwork plywood is the panel that shapes concrete during curing. Its selection determines three factors that directly affect project cost: the concrete surface finish, the number of reuses per panel, and the speed of assembly and stripping. Main types of formwork plywood

1. Film-faced birch plywood (phenolic plywood)

Film-faced plywood, also known as phenolic plywood or form plywood, is a multi-layer panel of European or Central Asian birch coated on both faces with a 120-220 g/m² phenolic film. It offers:

• Very smooth concrete finish (fair-faced concrete)
• 30 to 60 reuses with correct handling
• High resistance to moisture and cement alkalis
• Edges sealed with waterproof acrylic paint

Often specified as three-layer formwork board in public tenders and civil works. Its finish is not as smooth as phenolic, but its rigidity makes it preferable for horizontal slabs and floors.

3. Combi and eucalyptus plywood

Cost-effective alternative to full birch: eucalyptus or poplar core with birch or hardwood faces. Price 20-30% below full birch, but also fewer reuses (15-25) and lower dimensional stability. Recommended for one-off projects, not for companies with high formwork rotation.

Technical comparison: when to use each type

Standard sizes and thicknesses

Formwork boards are manufactured in two main formats:

• 1250 × 2500 mm — European standard. Compatible with most Spanish modular formwork systems.
• 1525 × 3050 mm — XL format. Reduces the number of joints in tall walls and optimises material usage.

Most requested thicknesses:

• 12 mm: light formwork, curved elements, thin column formwork.
• 15 mm: general use for walls and columns.
• 18 mm: tall walls, high concrete pressure.
• 21 mm: floors, slabs, three-layer for horizontal surfaces.

Applicable standards

When buying formwork plywood in Spain, verify three standards:

• EN 636 — moisture resistance classification for plywood (class 3 for exterior/formwork use).

Five common mistakes when buying formwork plywood

1. Buying on price per sheet alone

A premium phenolic board at €55/sheet giving 50 reuses costs €1.10 per use. A budget board at €35/sheet giving 15 reuses costs €2.33 per use — more than double. The real cost of formwork is measured in euros per m² per use, not in euros per sheet.

2. Not verifying bonding class

Many imported boards are sold as "phenolic plywood" without meeting EN 314-2 class 3. On site, this means delamination after 5-8 pours. Ask for the certificate.

3. Confusing three-layer with multi-ply plywood

The three-layer board (3 layers of solid wood) and multi-ply phenolic plywood (9-13 veneer layers) are technically different products. Three-layer is more rigid but delivers fewer reuses; multi-ply phenolic is smoother and withstands more cycles.

4. Buying thicknesses outside the application

A 12 mm board on a horizontal slab bows; a 21 mm board on curved formwork will not bend. Consult the correct thickness for each application with your technical supplier.

5. Neglecting edge sealing after the first cut

Every site cut opens the board's edge. Without waterproof acrylic resealing within 24 hours, water penetrates the inner layers and cuts reuses by half. It costs less than €0.50 per sheet and multiplies useful life.

Storage and care to maximise reuses

• Store horizontally, stacked on pallets, protected from rain and direct sunlight.
• Clean the board immediately after stripping with a plastic spatula (never metal).
• Apply release agent on every cycle — reduces phenolic film wear by up to 40%.
• Seal edges and cuts with waterproof acrylic paint.
• Rotate boards to even out wear; newer ones for fair-faced concrete, used ones for hidden slabs.
