Raw plywood vs melamine-faced plywood: what's the difference and when to choose each

Choosing between raw plywood and melamine-faced board is not an aesthetic decision. It is an industrial one that affects manufacturing cost, production flow and final product positioning. A custom furniture maker who buys melamine when they should be buying raw pays up to 40% more for a finish they will re-veneer anyway. Conversely, a kitchen workshop buying raw when they need melamine adds hours of edge-banding and lacquering that erase their margin. What each product is

Raw plywood

Raw plywood (also called uncoated plywood) is a multi-layer panel made of wood veneers cross-bonded, with no surface coating. The faces show the natural grain — typically European birch, poplar, eucalyptus or combi depending on grade — and accept any subsequent finish: paint, varnish, lacquer, decorative veneer, heat-pressed melamine or on-site re-veneering.

It is specified by number of layers (9, 11, 13), face grade (B/BB, BB/CP, CP/CP) and bonding class (EN 314-2 class 1, 2 or 3). It is the reference material for manufacturers who apply their own finish or produce technical parts where appearance is not the priority.

Melamine-faced board

The melamine-faced board is a base panel — usually particleboard, MDF or plywood — coated in the factory on one or both faces with a decorative sheet impregnated in melamine resin and heat-pressed at high pressure and temperature. The resulting face is hard, scratch-resistant, waterproof and lightfast.

There are two main families: melamine on particleboard (the most common in mid-range furniture) and melamine on plywood or MDF (for applications requiring through-screws, high density or better water performance). Colours and textures range from plain whites to oak, walnut, concrete and stone reproductions.

When to choose raw plywood

Raw plywood is the cost-effective choice when at least one of these four conditions applies:

• The manufacturer applies their own finish. Cabinet makers, custom furniture companies and re-veneering workshops buy raw and apply decorative veneer, lacquer or varnish per project. Buying melamine here doubles cost without adding value because the finished face is removed or covered.
• The part is hidden or does not require aesthetics. Cabinet backs, interior trays, structural reinforcements, industrial packaging elements, prototypes. The natural birch finish is enough and the savings are substantial.
• High mechanical resistance is required. Transport parts, industrial shelving, platforms, technical panels. Multi-ply plywood handles point loads, through-screws and cyclic loading better than melamine on particleboard.
• Moisture behaviour is required. With EN 314-2 class 2 or 3 (WBP), raw plywood keeps its properties in humid environments where melamine on particleboard swells at the edge within a few cycles.

When to choose melamine-faced board

Melamine wins in production whenever any of these scenarios applies:

• Ready-finished furniture direct. Cabinets, office desks, counters, kitchen or bathroom shelving in series. Buy the decorated board, cut, edge-band and assemble — no sanding or lacquering. Labour savings can reach 30-50% of total furniture cost.
• Specific catalogue decors. Technical whites, Sonoma oak, walnut, concrete grey, corporate colours. Colour uniformity between batches is guaranteed — nearly impossible with artisan lacquer.
• Residential use with frequent contact. The melamine face resists coffee stains, glass rings, everyday scratches. Lacquered raw board needs periodic maintenance.
• Series production. When manufacturing tens of identical units, buying melamine and running an automatic edge-bander is faster and more consistent than finishing each piece.

The real calculation: finished unit cost, not sheet price

The honest comparison is not "raw at €47 vs melamine at €75". It is finished cost per m², including material, finishing labour, consumables and waste. Typical example for a visible 1 m² part in 18 mm:

For visible parts produced in series, melamine wins. For custom projects with exclusive finish, raw plywood delivers a product no catalogue can match. The decision depends on commercial positioning, not on the price of the sheet.

Four common mistakes when buying

1. Buying melamine for hidden parts

Every cabinet back, tray or interior reinforcement made in melamine adds €3-5 per m² without adding value. Multiplied across an order of 200 units, that money never comes back.

2. Buying raw for series production without finishing equipment

If the workshop has no lacquer or veneering line, raw plywood becomes a bottleneck. Outsourced finishing is usually more expensive than buying melamine directly.

3. Not verifying the melamine substrate

"Melamine" alone can mean over particleboard, MDF or plywood. Each substrate has different price, weight and behaviour. For bathrooms or kitchens, ask for melamine on moisture-resistant substrate or on plywood.

4. Confusing bonding class in raw plywood

A class 1 raw plywood (dry interior) will fail in humid applications regardless of the finish quality. For exterior, transport or formwork ask for class 3 EN 314-2 (WBP).
