MDF, OSB and plywood are the three most-used wood-based panels in Spain, and one of the most frequent questions among carpenters, builders and B2B buyers is which one to choose. The short answer: they don't really compete with each other — each is designed for different applications, and mixing them up usually costs money, time or claims. In this guide we compare density, strength, price, sustainability and typical applications of each panel, with reference DDP Valencia 2026 prices.
3 panels, 3 different jobs
Before comparing prices and strengths, it helps to understand the industrial logic:
- MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) — designed for lacquered furniture, mouldings and machined surfaces. Uniform density, no grain, paints and routes like soft stone.
- OSB (Oriented Strand Board) — designed for dry construction and light structural elements. High mechanical strength at low cost, irregular strand-visible surface.
- Plywood — designed for applications demanding strength, stability and a quality surface. Cross-veneered plies of the same species (European birch, poplar, pine), bonded in odd numbers.
A carpenter building a lacquered kitchen uses MDF for the doors and plywood for the structural backs. A prefab-house builder uses OSB for wall panels and plywood for floors and roofing. A truck bodybuilder never uses MDF or OSB — only phenolic plywood. Each panel has its own turf.

MDF: what it is and when to use it
MDF is made from very fine wood fibres (finer than in particleboard) mixed with urea-formaldehyde or melamine-urea resins and hot-pressed at high pressure. The result is a uniform, grainless, dense panel with a perfectly smooth surface on both faces.
Typical parameters:
- Density: 680–800 kg/m³ (standard) or up to 900 kg/m³ (HDF, high-density)
- Thicknesses: 3, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 19, 22, 25, 30 mm
- Formats: 2440×1220 ("American" format), 2500×1250 (European format)
- Formaldehyde emission: E1 standard, E0.5 optional
- Standard: EN 622-5

Strengths: perfect surface for painting/lacquering, machines like soft stone, homogeneous, affordable.
Limitations: heavy (30–40 % heavier than plywood), poor moisture resistance (moisture-resistant MDF-H only tolerates occasional humidity), edge screwing is weak, no structural strength.
OSB: what it is and when to use it
OSB is made from large wood strands (typically pine, poplar or aspen), 100–150 mm long, oriented in 3–5 cross-layers and bonded with phenolic or polyurethane resins (MUF/PMDI). The result is a low-cost structural panel with a rough "visible strand" surface.
Typical parameters:
- Density: 600–680 kg/m³
- Thicknesses: 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 22, 25 mm
- Formats: 2500×1250, 2440×1220, 2800×1250
- Classes: OSB/1 (dry interior), OSB/2 (structural interior), OSB/3 (structural humid), OSB/4 (high-performance structural)
- Standard: EN 300
Typical OSB applications:
- Wall panels and roofing in timber-frame construction
- Raised technical floors in industry
- Structural backs for technical furniture
- Heavy packaging and export crates
- Temporary hoardings, fences, site huts
- Substrate for tile or slate roofing

Strengths: low cost per m², high structural strength, OSB/3 tolerates occasional humidity, large formats optimise on-site cutting.
Limitations: rough surface not suitable for fine finishes, cannot be lacquered like MDF, weak edge screwing, swells if repeatedly wet, absorbs moisture through unsealed edges.
Plywood: what it is and when to use it
Plywood is made from thin veneers (typically 1.4 mm) of solid wood — European birch, poplar, pine or eucalyptus — bonded in odd numbers (5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15…) with grain cross-oriented at 90°. The result is a panel with very high mechanical strength, dimensional stability and a smooth surface ready for finishing.

When NOT to use each panel (common mistakes)
MDF mistakes
- Using MDF in kitchens or bathrooms without ventilation — it swells with ambient humidity.
- Edge-screwing without pilot holes — it splits and fails under load.
- Using standard MDF outdoors — only the H (moisture-resistant) version tolerates occasional humidity.
- Using MDF for structural elements — it has no mechanical strength.
OSB mistakes
- Leaving it exposed on-site without sealing edges — it absorbs moisture and swells.
- Using OSB/1 or OSB/2 on roofs — rain destroys them in months. Only OSB/3 or OSB/4 hold up.
- Lacquering OSB — the rough surface cannot be finished properly.
- Using OSB for exposed-concrete formwork — the strand texture prints on the concrete.
Plywood mistakes
- Buying imported class-1 (interior) plywood for outdoor use — it delaminates.
- Using poplar plywood for truck bodies or formwork — it lacks birch's strength.
- Not sealing edges after cutting — reduces service life in formwork and marine applications.
- Paying for BB/BB when the application accepts BB/CP or CP/CP — unnecessary cost.

What a professional chooses by application
Lacquered furniture, kitchens, wardrobe doors
MDF for lacquered visible faces. Plywood for structure and structural backs. OSB is not used.
Dry construction, prefab houses, roofing
OSB/3 or OSB/4 for wall panels, roofs and floors. Plywood as spot structural reinforcement. MDF is not used (cannot withstand humidity).
Truck bodies, transport platforms

Exposed-concrete formwork
Phenolic FW plywood is mandatory. OSB prints strand texture on the concrete. MDF is destroyed on the first pour.
Technical packaging and export
OSB for economy crates and pallets. Plywood for precision machinery, electronic components, maritime export. MDF is not used (weight and moisture sensitivity).
Shop furniture, displays, stands
MDF for lacquered and CNC-routed finishes. Plywood for visible structure with natural edge ("industrial premium" look). OSB only for temporary "recycled" aesthetics.
Marine and constant-water-contact applications
Marine plywood is mandatory. MDF and OSB do not compete.
