Multilayer birch plywood is one of the most chosen materials by European toy manufacturers. Its combination of mechanical strength, smooth surface and low formaldehyde emissions makes it possible to produce safe parts for children, with fine finishes that withstand years of intensive use.
Why birch plywood is ideal for toys
- Multilayer structure: 9, 11 or 13 cross-bonded veneers providing dimensional stability, preventing warping when the toy is used outdoors or humidity changes.
- Smooth surface without surface knots: allows uniform lacquering, screen printing and water-based paints, with no defects or splinters.
- Clean CNC and laser cutting: birch layers cut precisely without tear-out, ideal for small parts, jigsaw pieces and puzzles.
- Low formaldehyde (E1 or E0 class): complies with European emission standards for children's products and indoor furniture.
- Impact resistance: multilayer birch withstands drops and impacts without splintering — critical for toys intended for small children.
Formats and thicknesses used in toymaking
For toy manufacturers we work with the following standard sizes from Valencia stock:
- 1525×3050 mm and 1250×2500 mm in sanded multilayer birch B/BB, BB/BB and BB/CP grades.
- Thicknesses from 4 mm (puzzle parts, laser cutting) up to 18 mm (children's furniture, toy kitchens).
- Plywood with brown or black phenolic film for outdoor toys that need moisture resistance.

European standards for wooden toys
All our panels comply with EN 71-3 on migration of chemical elements in toys and EN 71-1 on mechanical and physical properties. Formaldehyde emissions per EN 13986 class E1 (below 0.124 mg/m³). We also offer FSC/PEFC certified references for clients requiring sustainable wood traceability.
